Rebuilding Together New Britain has been serving low-income homeowners in need in New Britain for over twenty one years. Rebuilding Together New Britain is a local affiliate of the nation’s leading volunteer based non-profit working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities, Rebuilding Together National. Rebuilding Together National has nearly 200 affiliates in nation-wide. Through its affiliates, Rebuilding Together National renovates and repairs over 9,000 houses and non-profit facilities annually; contributing an estimated 3 million volunteer hours, and delivering an estimated $172 million dollars in services.
The City of New Britain has a growing number of low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly, disabled, and families with children, who desperately need help with home maintenance and repairs in order to live in comfort, safety and independence in their own homes.
Elderly homeowners often face illness, physical challenges, and the loss of a spouse. Limited by low, fixed incomes, it becomes difficult for many to maintain their homes as they once had with pride. Many elderly and disabled homeowners also need home modifications, such as grab bars or accessibility ramps, to remain safe and independent in their own homes. However, even simple modifications are costly and often beyond their financial reach. Without help, many of these homes will deteriorate, creating eyesores and risks to the safety of the homeowners themselves.
In addition, many low-income families are struggling to maintain and preserve their homes and homeownership during these difficult economic times. With rising costs, lower property values, and a challenging job market, many low-income families have trouble meeting basic expenses. Too often, these homeowners must choose between competing necessities, and cannot afford improvements and repairs critical to maintaining a safe, healthy and secure home in which to raise their children.
